Tony Mason, a bartender at a restaurant near the Jack Daniel's distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, claims to have created it around 1980. Jack Daniel's later incorporated the recipe into their marketing, helping turn it into one of the most-ordered whiskey cocktails at casual American bars through the 1980s and 1990s.
