Origin & Story

Texas/Northern Mexico border, late 20th century

The Beerita — also called a Beer Margarita or Coronarita — emerged from the cantinas and backyard parties straddling the Texas-Mexico border sometime in the 1980s or 1990s, where a cooler full of icy Coronas and a jug of margarita mix were both standard party supplies. The clever solution of combining them was too obvious to ignore. Today the Beerita is a tailgate and beach staple across the American Southwest: it carries the bright citrus and salt of a margarita with the cold, easy-drinking quality of a lager, and the tequila hides just well enough to be dangerous. Chili-salt on the rim and a lime wedge squeezed in complete the effect.
