Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila (blanco)
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • Salt for rimming
  • Lime wheel, to garnish

Instructions

  1. 1Rim a rocks glass with salt and fill with ice.
  2. 2Shake tequila, triple sec, and lime juice with ice until well chilled.
  3. 3Strain into the prepared glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

Mexico, late 1930s–40s

Multiple bartenders on both sides of the US-Mexico border claim to have invented it in the late 1930s or 1940s; the most repeated tale credits Carlos "Danny" Herrera, who mixed it for a customer allergic to all spirits but tequila.
