Origin & Story

Harry's New York Bar, Paris, 1924

The word 'scofflaw' — meaning someone who flouts the law — was coined during Prohibition and quickly became a badge of honor for American drinkers in exile. Harry's New York Bar in Paris ran a contest to name a new cocktail in its honor, and the winning recipe combined rye, dry vermouth, lemon, and grenadine in a tartly patriotic toast to bootleggers everywhere.
